Jaret Wright

By Allyson Turner

Jaret Wright finished the regular season with a 12-10 record and a 4.61 ERA with 140 strikeouts. Wright was outstanding in the 1997 postseason as he compiled a 3-0 record in five playoff starts. He became the youngest pitcher in American League Division Series history after he started and won Game 2 in Yankee Stadium on Oct. 2, 1997. Wright won the deciding Game 5 vs. New York, putting the Indians in the ALCS for the second time in three years. Wright then went on to start and win Game 4 of the World Series vs. the Florida Marlins.

If you could live as someone else for a day, whose life would you choose?
A successful rock band, maybe Pearl Jam or Guns & Roses and put me as the lead singer in a sold-out concert, dancing right on stage. That would be pretty fun for a day.

What is your biggest pet peeve?
Traffic.

It's your last meal, where and what do you eat?
I go straight to Dell Taco, a fast-food Mexican place back home. I'd get a couple of chicken soft tacos, a combination burrito and, if I'm feeling real spicey, I'd get some of their hot nachos.

What are you intimidated by?
I don't like sharks. I like to surf so when I'm in the water, if I saw one, I'd be pretty intimidated.

If you could be a fly on the wall anywhere, where would it be?
The Oval Office.

What is the best part about being a professional athlete? And the worst?
The best part is you get to play a game as a job and a career, and you get paid well to do that. The worst part is that everything you do is looked at and everything you do is scrutinized, and the loss of privacy. So there's a give and take there.

If I were to push "play" on your CD player, what would be playing?
311. It's one of their first CDs. It's a good CD.

If your car hit a parked car and you're sure no one saw you, what would you do?
What kind of car was it? Ummm, what would I do? I'd have to do the responsible thing and leave a note on the hood [laugh] and tell them to give me a call.

If you had to drive across country, who would you like to travel with?
My girlfriend.

If your life was a feature film, would it be a comedy, drama or action? What would the title be?
It would definitely have to be all three of those. I wouldn't single out one. I like all three of those things in my life and I would probably call it, up to now, Jaret's Wild Ride, I guess.

What talent do you wish you had?
I wish I could play the drums or guitar.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
I tell this story to (teammate Brian) Giles. In high school I had this little Mitsubishi hatchback. I ran over to Kmart because I just had the black rims on there and I bought those snap-on chrome wheels. So I snapped those things on and I parked it in the school parking lot, and I had to go to football practice. I think I was a sophmore. The seniors had popped my hubcaps off and placed them on top of my car. I just happened to be walking with a girl I had just met and she found that funny. That was pretty embarrassing.

What is the one word or phrase that you live by?
There's so many of them. I'd say have fun, set and accomplish your goals and have fun while you're doing it.

Name your top three sitcoms?

  • Friends
  • Seinfeld
  • Three's Company

Who did you most look up to as a kid?
My dad had a big influence with me playing baseball. That was something I wanted to do, so I admired him a lot.

What is a perfect day for Jaret Wright?

  • During season, the day I'm pitching in a postseason game or a World Series game. Waking up, relaxing, going to get something to eat. Watch a little TV after you eat. Head to the yard and prepare for the game. Go out and pitch a good game. End up winning a clinching game. Hang out with a couple buddies afterward.
  • Off-season, sleep until I wake up. No alarms. Call some guys, see if they want to surf. Hopefully the waves will be good. Surf once, then go grab something to eat. If the waves are still good and the sun is out -- this is all in trunks, not a wet suit, not anything like that -- go surf 'til the sun goes down. Then hang out some more. Take a little nap in there. Sounds good to me.
