Vols rally past Arkansas; K-State ends skid against Nebraska
CBS SportsLine wire reports
Tennessee survives. Barely. Travis
The previously unbeaten Razorbacks seemed headed for victory late in the game. But Arkansas quarterback Clint Stoerner, who earlier threw three touchdown passes, fumbled while trying to run out the clock and Tennessee recovered to set up Henry's late heroics. The question now is whether the victory is enough to keep Tennessee atop the Bowl Championship Series standings. UCLA, second in the BCS, defeated Washington 36-24. More impressive, though, was Kansas State's 40-30 victory over No. 11 Nebraska. The Wildcats, who entered the game third in the BCS standings, earned their first victory over the Cornhuskers in nearly 30 years. Saturday's Top 25 highlights: No. 1 Tennessee 28, No. 10 Arkansas 24KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Arkansas (8-1, 5-1 Southeastern Conference) outplayed the Vols (9-0, 6-0) and appeared to have won when it held on fourth down at midfield to take possession at the Tennessee 49 with 1:54 left. All the Razorbacks needed was a first down, or a punt to force the Vols to go a long way -- something they had found hard to do against the Hogs defense. But on second down, quarterback Clint Stoerner tripped as he pulled away from the line of scrimmage. He put his right hand -- with the ball in it -- on the ground to try to regain his balance, and left the ball there. Tennessee's Billy Ratliff recovered at the Arkansas 43 with 1:43 left. Travis Henry carried five consecutive times against the stunned Razorbacks defense for the deciding score. He finished with 197 yards on 32 carries. No. 2 Kansas State 40, No. 11 Nebraska 30MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Despite all the turnovers, the turnaround is complete at Kansas State.Michael Bishop ran for two touchdowns and threw for two, including an 11-yarder with 5:25 to go, and the Wildcats finally tossed aside once-mighty Nebraska. The momentous victory kept the Wildcats (10-0, 7-0 Big 12) on track for their first national title and ended a 29-game losing streak to the Cornhuskers (8-3, 4-3). It also clinched the Big 12 North title for the Wildcats, their first football crown of any kind since 1934. No. 3 UCLA 36, Washington 24SEATTLE -- UCLA, getting a 77-yard punt return by Ryan Roques and five field goals from Chris Sailer, clinched the Pac-10 championship and remained unbeaten with a victory over Washington. After four consecutive close calls, including a victory in the final minute against Oregon State last week, the Bruins (9-0, 7-0 Pac-10) extended their winning streak to 19 games. They haven't lost since the second week of last season. The Bruins, No. 2 in the Bowl Championship Series rankings behind Tennessee this week, have Southern California and Miami left on their schedule in a bid to get into the Jan. 4 Fiesta Bowl that will determine the national title. No. 4 Florida 33, South Carolina 14GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- If overall improvement counted for anything in the Bowl Championship Series formula, Florida wouldn't have much to worry about. The Gators continued a steady upward climb Saturday, getting 13 catches for 222 yards from receiver Travis McGriff in a victory over South Carolina. Doug Johnson threw for 360 yards and four touchdowns as the Gators (9-1, 7-1 Southeastern Conference) won their seventh consecutive game and stayed alive for the national title with a big game at No. 5 Florida State next week. No. 5 Florida State 24, Wake Forest 7WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Mario Edwards rescued sloppy Florida State with a school-record four interceptions and the fifth-ranked Seminoles claimed at least a share of another ACC title.Edwards' interceptions came on a day when the Seminoles had 14 penalties for 139 yards, were held to 3-and-outs six times and got sporadic production from first-time starting quarterback Marcus Outzen. It mattered little, however, because of the performance of Edwards, whose interceptions set up every Florida State score. No. 6 Texas A&M 17, No. 13 Missouri 14COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Russell Bynum's 39-yard field goal with 1:30 to play, his third of the game, capped a game of big mistakes and rallied Texas A&M past Missouri. The Aggies (10-1, 7-0 Big 12) beat Missouri (7-3, 5-2) for the fifth consecutive time and extended their winning streak to 10 games, clinching at least a tie for the Big 12 South title. The Aggies could win the title if No. 18 Texas loses to Texas Tech Saturday night. No. 7 Ohio State 45, Iowa 14IOWA CITY, Iowa -- David Boston caught two of Joe Germaine's three touchdown passes and Joe Montgomery scored on an 80-yard run as Ohio State bounced back from a stinging loss to beat Iowa.Boston, who became the Buckeyes' career receiving leader, and Germaine saw to it that Ohio State (9-1 overall, 6-1 Big Ten) didn't stumble again after losing its No. 1 ranking because of a 28-24 loss to Michigan State. No. 15 Michigan 27, No. 8 Wisconsin 10ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan dominated Wisconsin, using a powerful running game and a stifling run defense for a victory that secured at least a tie for the Big Ten title and spoiled the Badgers' perfect record. Anthony Thomas and Clarence Williams each ran for more than 100 yards and the Wolverines defense held Ron Dayne to a season-low 53 yards on 16 carries as Michigan (8-2, 7-0 Big Ten) extended its conference winning streak to 16 games. The Badgers (9-1, 6-1) remain in contention for a Rose Bowl berth, needing a victory next weekend against Penn State and a Michigan loss at Ohio State. Michigan would get the spot with a victory over Ohio State. No. 9 Arizona 27, California 23BERKELEY, Calif. -- Keith Smith threw for two touchdowns and Trung Canidate had another long touchdown run for No. 9 Arizona Saturday night. It was the fifth consecutive victory for Arizona (10-1, 6-1 Pac-10) since a 52-28 loss to third-ranked UCLA, the Wildcats' lone defeat this season. Cal (5-5, 3-4) lost for the fourth time in five games and remains one victory shy of becoming bowl eligible. Canidate, who had 94 yards in 16 carries, scored on a 54-yard run with 11:36 left, putting Arizona up 27-10. His sixth rushing touchdown of 50 or more yards this season came after Cal had helped keep the Wildcats' drive alive by hitting Smith late out of bounds after a scramble. It was one of Cal's 15 penalties totaling 154 yards. No. 12 Notre Dame 30, Navy 0LANDOVER, Md. -- Autry Denson became Notre Dame's career rushing leader and the most lopsided rivalry in college football history stayed that way as the Irish beat Navy for the 35th consecutive time. The Irish (8-1) led 27-0 after three quarters in easily extending their NCAA-record winning streak against Navy (3-6). Syracuse 28, No. 16 Virginia Tech 26SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse wins on the final play of the game when Donovan McNabb hit Stephen Brominski with a 13-yard touchdown pass as time expires Saturday night. It was Syracuse coach Paul Pasqualoni's 100th career victory, and it couldn't have been sweeter, for it kept the Orangemen in line to win a third consecutive Big East title. Victories in their remaining games against Temple and No. 24 Miami would send the Orangemen (6-3 overall, 4-1 Big East) to the Orange or Sugar bowls. For the Hokies (7-2, 4-2), it was a bitter defeat. Virginia Tech's defense scored 14 points, including what appeared to be the game-winner on a 2-point conversion return after Syracuse scored a TD with 12:23 remaining. Texas' Williams, however, became the second player in Division I-A history to break the 6,000-yard mark for his career. He's 63 yards shy of breaking Tony Dorsett's rushing record with one game. Wane McGarrity caught a school-record four touchdown passes from Major Applewhite for the Longhorns (7-3, 5-2 Big 12), who had won six consecutive games. The loss clinched the Big 12 South title for No. 6 Texas A&M.
