Nebraska rallies; Florida St., Texas A&M win Top 25 battles

For Quarterback Monte Christo scored a pair of second-half touchdowns Saturday as the seventh-ranked Cornhuskers rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat No. 19 Missouri 20-13. Missouri had a chance to tie it when Corby Jones drove the Tigers to Nebraska's 22 with nine seconds left before throwing incomplete to John Dausman in the end zone. Jones lined the Tigers up with four seconds left, scrambling to find an open receiver before Eric Johnson sacked him for a 12-yard loss to end the game. The victory was Nebraska's 20th consecutive over its Big 12 rival and its 47th in a row at home. In other games between Top 25 teams, sixth-ranked Florida State spotted No. 20 Georgia Tech a 7-0 lead before surging to a 34-7 victory. The victory moved the Seminoles into a three-way tie atop the ACC with Virginia and the Yellow Jackets. And in a Big 12 battle, No. 8 Texas A&M beat No. 25 Texas Tech 17-10. No. 2 UCLA 28, California 16BERKELEY, Calif. -- Cade McNown threw for two touchdowns and Jermaine Lewis ran for one and passed for another on a halfback option as No. 2 UCLA beat California 28-16 Saturday for its 16th straight win. Cal's defense, top-ranked in the Pac-10, held the Bruins' high-powered offense to a season-low in points, blitzing on nearly every play and putting constant hits on McNown. But the Golden Bears' aggressiveness also cost them. They never saw the Lewis' trick play coming, and McNown dodged the pressure enough to scramble for key gains, finishing with 57 yards rushing. He also completed 15 of 27 passes for 182 yards. No. 3 Tennessee 35, Alabama 18KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Peerless Price's 100-yard kickoff return and a sturdy running game carried No. 3 Tennessee past Alabama 35-18 Saturday, the Volunteers' fourth straight win in the series. Tennessee (6-0, 4-0 Southeastern Conference) put together three long scoring drives to go with Price's return and the defense made it stand up against the Crimson Tide (4-3, 2-3). Vols quarterback Tee Martin scored twice on short runs to cap drives of 77 and 76 yards as Tennessee churned out 231 yards. No. 4 Kansas State 52, Iowa State 7MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Michael Bishop threw three touchdown passes before limping to the sideline and Eric Hickson broke school records for career rushing yards and rushing touchdowns as Kansas State beat Iowa State.Bishop, who leads the Big 12 in total offense and has thrown 15 TD passes in seven games, was favoring his right leg when he went out with 13 minutes remaining in the third period. He was replaced by Adam Helm, who completed an 80-yard, 14-play drive with a one-yard TD run to give the Wildcats (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) a 35-0 lead with 7:06 left in the third. Bishop wound up with 270 yards in total offense in a little more than a half, including 216 yards passing as the Wildcats stretched their school-record winning streak to 15. No. 7 Nebraska 20, No. 19 Missouri 13LINCOLN, Neb. -- Former walk-on quarterback Monte Christo came off the bench for starter Bobby Newcombe, running for two second-half touchdowns as Nebraska rallied to beat Missouri.Christo, nicknamed "The Count of Monte Christo," was the difference this time with his extra-effort running, gaining many of his 67 rushing yards after contact with defenders. But Christo also gave the Tigers (5-2, 3-1) a final opportunity by fumbling a snap as Nebraska tried to run out the clock, giving Missouri the ball near midfield with 1:38 to play. The Aggies capitalized on Texas Tech miscues in the second half, with one of its two interceptions setting up a 24-yard field goal by Russell Bynum that made it 17-10 with 9:47 to play. Edgerrin James scored three touchdowns for Miami (4-2, 2-1), which hadn't beaten a Top 25 team since 1996 and hadn't come from behind in the fourth quarter to win a game since beating West Virginia 10-7 two years ago on a blocked punt in the final minute. No. 14 Arizona 45, NE Louisiana 7TUCSON, Ariz. -- Keith Smith threw two touchdown passes to Dennis Northcutt and ran for a third score, all in the first 16 minutes, as No. 14 Arizona routed Northeast Louisiana 45-7 Saturday night. The Wildcats (7-1) scored touchdowns on five of their first six possessions against the overmatched Indians (2-5), who have been outscored 149-24 this season in road games against Kansas State, Florida and Arizona. The 45 points were the most for the Wildcats in a non-overtime game since they beat Utah State 49-3 to open the 1992 season. Kansas 33, No. 17 Colorado 17LAWRENCE, Kan. -- David Winbush rushed for a career-high 268 yards, the most ever allowed by Colorado, and scored three touchdowns and Tim Bowers returned a fumble 48 yards for a touchdown as Kansas upset the No. 17 Buffaloes 33-17 Saturday night. Winbush, getting most of the snaps as Mitch Bowles sat out with a hamstring injury, rushed 29 times in gaining 10 more yards against Colorado than David Overstreet of Oklahoma gained in 1982. Kansas (2-5 overall, 1-5 Big 12) broke a 10-game losing streak against ranked teams. No. 18 Notre Dame 20, Army 17SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame kicker Jim Sanson atoned for two missed opportunities with a career-best 48-yard field goal in the final two minutes as the Irish beat Army.Sanson, who earlier missed a 48-yard attempt into the wind, had just enough leg to get the low, wobbly kick through the uprights with 1:06 left. Army, which had attempted just one pass before Sanson's winning kick, then had to abandon its running game on its next possession, and Notre Dame's Johnny Sanders intercepted a pass from Johnny Goff at the Irish 37 with eight seconds left to preserve the victory. LSU 41, No. 24 Mississippi State 6BATON ROUGE, La. -- Kevin Faulk resurfaced at LSU Saturday night and so did the Tigers, beating No. 24 Mississippi State 41-6. After three straight losses, LSU (4-3, 2-3 Southeastern Conference) returned to the form that had made it a preseason pick to win the conference -- power running that ate up yards and the clock, interspersed with timely passes from Herb Tyler. Faulk rushed for 123 yards on 24 carries and scored three touchdowns, two by rushing and one receiving. In LSU's three losses, Faulk hadn't rushed for more than 88 yards or scored a touchdown.
