Sun Devils continue early-season slide
CBS SportsLine wire reports
PROVO, Utah -- A multi-talented tailback dominated the game at Cougar Stadium, and it wasn't J.R. Redmond. Sophomore
The Sun Devils, who started the year at No. 8, allowed 68 points in their first two games while falling to 0-2. BYU (1-1) upset Arizona State for the second straight year. Last season, the Sun Devils were also ranked 14th before losing 13-10 to the Cougars at Tempe, Ariz. Arizona State's high-powered offense sputtered all night as receivers dropped passes, quarterback Ryan Kealy missed his targets and Redmond, the star tailback, looked helpless against BYU's run defense. Redmond, who had 254 all-purpose yards last week against Washington, managed just 28 yards on 16 rushes. He also fumbled deep in his territory with 1:16 remaining in the first half, allowing Brigham Young to kick a field goal and take a 16-0 halftime lead. THE COUGARS PICKED apart Arizona State's defense with short passes by Kevin Feterik and long runs by Jenkins, who scored on a 2-yard run midway through the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Jenkins, who was limited to six carries and 11 yards last week at Alabama
The Sun Devils, who lost 42-38 to Washington last week, were also undisciplined, collecting 105 yards in penalties and sometimes displaying a mystifying inability to make open-field tackles. With 11:57 left in the first half, BYU's Ben Horton caught a deflected pass at his 35 and rambled through the Arizona State secondary for a 74-yard touchdown. Six Sun Devils missed tackles as Horton, not known for his blazing speed, found the end zone with little breath to spare. BRIGHAM YOUNG ALSO had an edge in the kicking game. Owen Pochman was perfect on four field goal attempts, while Arizona State's Mike Gauthier missed two field goals in the first half and Stephen Baker had an extra point attempt blocked. BYU coach LaVell Edwards passed Michigan's Bo Schembechler for seventh place on the coaching victory list with 235. Edwards is third in victories among active coaches. Arizona State coach Bruce Snyder inserted Redmond at free safety after the Cougars completed two passes for 49 yards on their opening possession of the game. Snyder was criticized last week for not using Redmond on defense, but the junior made little difference against BYU. Arizona State's first half was a near disaster. The Sun Devils managed just 118 yards of offense, 63 coming during a second-quarter drive that ended in one of Gauthier's missed field goals. The Sun Devils' only touchdown came when Kealy hit Lenzie Jackson from 15 yards early in the fourth quarter.
