Wolverines capture intrastate showdown

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Tom Brady passed for one touchdown and ran for another, and Michigan's defense came up with five second-half sacks as the Wolverines beat Michigan State 29-17 in their Big Ten opener Saturday.

Anthony Thomas rushed 13 times for 97 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown for Michigan (2-2, 1-0 Big Ten). Sedrick Irvin ran for 107 yards on 21 carries

for the Spartans (1-3, 0-1) who are 9-4-2 in conference openers against Michigan.

Brady, who completed 15-of-26 with one interception, tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Tai Streets to put the Wolverines ahead for the first time at 17-10 with 6:58 remaining in the second quarter. Michigan led the rest of the way.

Bill Burke, who completed 17-of-33 for 158 yards with one interception, threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress to give the Spartans a 10-3 lead with 5:44 left in the first quarter.

JAY FEELY KICKED FIELD GOALS of 51, 45 and 38 yards for Michigan. Paul Edinger kicked a 43-yarder for the Spartans, but missed two other attempts.

Michigan's defense, which had yielded over 400 yards in each of its last two games, held the Spartans to 268 yards and kept them scoreless in the second half. Nate Miller had two of the sacks for Michigan.

The Wolverines, meanwhile, rolled up 414 yards against Michigan State.

The Spartans, who had no penalties in the first half, also hurt themselves with eight for a loss of 57 yard in the second half.
