Newcombe throws in practice
CBS SportsLine wire reports
LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Knee is getting better. It's the left knee of Nebraska quarterback Bobby Newcombe, which suffered a slight tear to a ligament in Saturday's 56-27 victory over Louisiana Tech.
The injury likely will keep Newcombe out of this week's game against Alabama-Birmingham. Newcombe did not take any snaps during Monday's practice, but spent about 15 minutes throwing to receivers and did not seem to be hampered by the injury. "I FEEL OK," Newcombe said before flashing a grin after practice. ``I can still jog on it, run on it - cut a little bit. Doing a full-out sprint bothers me a little bit." Newcombe thinks he could play Saturday. "I think I could, but the coaches don't want to push it," he said. The injury, which also was suffered this spring by wide receiver Matt Davison and in the past by star running back Roger Craig, will not require surgery. Coach Frank Solich said no decision on Newcombe's status for Saturday will be made until late in the week. "WE'LL JUST TAKE HIS situation a day at a time," Solich said. ``Certainly, he needs to do the mental part of it ... as far as meetings, as far as being out here at practice watching every play. He's the kind of guy that you don't have to ask or tell to do that. "Just where he'll be at physically remains to be seen," Solich said. "There's very little swelling, which is a very good sign." When Newcombe returns to action, he probably will have to wear a brace, Solich said. Newcombe completed 9-of-10 passes for 168 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown strike to Sheldon Jackson on Nebraska's third play Saturday. Newcombe also carried 12 times for 12 yards, scoring twice. A sophomore who played wingback and returned punts last season, Newcombe was hurt on an option play after pitching to Dan Alexander, who scored on a 4-yard run. Freshman Eric Crouch led the No. 1 offense during Monday's practice.
