CBS SportsLine wire reports Feb. 15, 1998 ARCADIA, Calif. -- At 56-1, Keeper Hill was the second-longest shot in the nine-filly field in the $200,000 Las Virgenes Stakes on Sunday. Imagine everyone's surprise at Santa Anita when David Flores rode her to a 5 1/2-length victory in the one-mile Grade I stakes race for 3-year-old fillies. Keeper Hill, whose time was 1:36 4-5, paid $114.20, $25.80, and $9.60. Keeper Hill moved inside on the second turn, then challenged Star of Broadway nearing the midstretch, taking a short lead and then pulled clear in the final stretch. Career Collection finishes fourth. Star of Broadway paid $5 and $3.60 while third-place finisher Occhi Verdi paid $3.60. Star of Broadway, the 8-5 favorite, and Occhi Verdi had been unbeaten in their first three starts. |
