L'ALPE D'HUEZ, France -- Marco Pantani of Italy won Saturday's 13th stage and Germany's Jan Ullrich increased his overall lead in the Tour De France, the world's most prestigious cycling race.

Pantani finished 47 seconds ahead of Ullrich in Saturday's 127-mile jaunt from Saint-Etienne to the resort of L'Alpe D'Huez in the Alps, which contains the longest downhill slope in the world with an altitude of 1,780 meters.

Ullrich, who took over the overall lead in Stage 10 and won Stage 12 Friday in the town of Saint-Etienne, increased his advantage over Frenchman Richard Virenque to six minutes and 22 seconds.

VIRENQUE FINISHED THIRD in Saturday's race, one minute and 27 seconds behind Pantani.

Pantani passed defending champion Bjarne Riis of Denmark, Ullrich's Telekom teammate, and Spain's Abraham Olano into third-place in the overall standings with Saturday's victory.

Ullrich, last year's runner-up, took the overall lead from Cedric Vasseur of France after capturing Tuesday's 10th stage in Andorra.

The riders will reach the finish line along the Champs Elysees in Paris on July 27.
