CBS SportsLine staff and wires May 2, 1997 LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Pulpit and Captain Bodgit headline the field for the 123rd running of the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of racing's triple crown, Saturday at Churchill Downs. Pulpit, the 2-1 morning line favorite, is attempting to become just the second horse to win the Derby after going unraced as a 2-year-old (Apollo, 1882). Pulpit will run from the seventh and middle post. Pulpit is between Celtic Warrior, a 50-1 longshot and the lone gelding, and Hello, a 12-1 choice that acted up at the gate in his last two races and could present a problem for Pulpit, a high-strung hor se. CAPTAIN BODGIT, WHICH HAS BATTLED Pulpit throughout the preliminary season with each horse winning one meeting, is the second choice at 5-2. "The Captain" is coming off a win in the Wood Memorial last month. Captain Bodgit, drew the fourth post and will start alongside Silver Charm, the third choice at 5-1. Florida bred Silver Charm, who finished second in the Santa Anita Derby in early April, should be one of the horses setting the early pace. Crypto Star, a strong finisher at 10-1, got the post position in the 13-horse field, the smallest since 1985. The George Steinbrenner-owned Concerto, leaving from the third post, has won its last five races. Free House, an 8-1 shot ridden by David Flores, won the San Felipe Stakes and the Santa Anita Derby, defeating Silver Charm in both instances. DEEDS NOT WORDS HAS SEEN its name surface this week but is likely just an entry to keep trainer D. Wayne Lukas' 17-year streak of fielding at least one Derby starter. Lukas is trying to win a record third straight Kentucky Derby. Lukas has won the last two Derbys with Grindstone and Thunder Gulch but will be hard-pressed to continue that streak. But the entry did extend his streak of starting at least one horse in every Kentucky Derby since 1981. The relatively small field for the 123rd running of the Derby, equals the 13 that went postward in 1985 when Spend a Buck wired the field. There were just 10 entries in the 1979 "Run For The Roses", won by Spectacular Bid, who was the last favorite to emerge victorious. Post time for 1 1/4-mile classic is scheduled for 5:32 p.m. ET. |
