I'm looking forward to getting back into action later this month when I play
once again in the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, starting on
Wednesday, the 15th. Other than the Lexus Challenge, a two-round
event just before Christmas in which a group of us seniors played
with some well-known movie/TV celebrities as partners in a
"fun" competition at La Quinta, California, I haven't
teed it up in a tournament since the Emerald Coast classic on the
Senior Tour in Pensacola, Florida, the first week-end of
November.
The Hope has always been one of my favorite
tournaments. I love the California desert country and the golf
courses at Palm Spring and vicinity. I guess I should, since I've
won the tournament five times over the years, starting in the
first one in 1960. No. 5 in 1973 was my 61st win and the last
time I won on regular PGA Tour. I believe that I'm the only pro
who has played in the tournament every year.
After that tournament, I will fly from California
to Hawaii in my Cessna Citation x Jet for the Senior Skins Game
at Mauna Lani on the Big Island of Hawaii on Super Bowl week-end.
This year, I'll be up against Jack Nicklaus, Raymond Floyd, who
is the defending champion, and Hale Irwin, who just turned 50 in
1995 and is playing in the Senior Skins for first time.
