Arnold Palmer looks at the Ryder Cup

I've been around many of the members of our U.S. Ryder Cup team lately and I get the strong impression that they are really zeroing in on the Matches. They seem hyped to win at Valderrama. I think they will, but it should be a very close competition. I certainly hope, though, that in the heat of battle sportsmanship and the traditions of the game will prevail.

I have a special interest in this American team because many of them played for me on last year's President's Cup team in Washington. Recall how that one came right down to the wire before Fred Couples made that big putt on the 17th hole of the final match to give us the win. It could happen just like that again in Spain.

I have many fond memories of my own Ryder Cup experiences, both as a player and twice as captain. I was involved in all except one Ryder Cup Match between 1961 and 1975, serving as playing captain in 1963 at Atlanta's East Lake and non-playing captain in 1975 at Laurel Valley at nearby Ligonier, Pennsylvania.

(EDITOR'S NOTE: Arnold Palmer's Ryder Cup record is 22-8-2, his best individual year being 1967 at the Champions in Houston, where he won all five of his matches.)
