Arnold Palmer on The Presidents Cup

Palmer and Pres. Clinton If the future of the Presidents Cup was ever in serious doubt, the recently concluded matches in Washington D.C. surely put such negative thoughts to rest. I have heard nothing but good things from all quarters about the excitement generated by the two teams and the skillful performances of the 24 of the world's greatest professional golfers in the competition at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in suburban Manassas, Virginia, that went down to the wire and Fred Couples' 30-foot birdie putt in the final match that Sunday afternoon.

Couples and Love It was a thrill for me as the U.S. captain to work so closely with the talented members of my team. Their enthusiasm -- and that of the International Team players, I should add-- was very evident and will surely stimulate future Presidents Cup teams. It seems certain that the matches will be played in other parts of the world, either next time in 1998, or in 2000. I think it is very important that this happens. The Presidents Cup format demands an international stage.
