Arnold's Q & A

Arnold Palmer Gets Personal On The Golf Channel
Q: Where can I get a framed picture of Arnold's last wave to the crowd at St. Andrews?
A: The St. Andrews bridge photo/print can be ordered by calling 1-800-398-3116.
Q: What do you think is the most inportant personality trait needed to become a great golfer?
A: The desire to win, ability to concentrate, but you must have true ability.
Q: How important is it to have a spouse that supports your golf career?
A: It is tremendously important to have the support of your wife -- in many ways. Both Jack and I were very fortunate to have such wonderful ladies.
Q: When will your sportsline of clothes be on the market?
A: The new Palmer line of sportsware will be available soon in department stores operated by Federated Department Stores.
Q: Dear Mr. Palmer, do you think you can still win at 67?
A: Sure, I think I can win again, particularly since you didn't limit your question to the PGA Tours.
Q: What was your most memorable victory?
A: The U.S. Amateur in 1954. It was the turning point in my career and my life.

Q: You've played on golf courses all over the world. What was the most difficult course? Do you have a favorite?
A: I have played so many difficult and excellent courses in my career that I have never wanted to single one out.
Q: How has life on the tour changed? Is it easier than when you started out?
A: Life on the tour is much easier for most players these days, with the abundance of jet travel, public and private, and the ready availability of ground transportation at all stops. There are also more and better hotels and motels.
Q: There have been major changes in both ball and club design over the years. How have technological advances changed the game?
A: The high-tech era has brought a noticeable change. Everybody is longer, to the point that some of the old established courses are almost too short for today's play.
Q: What are the signature elements of an Arnold Palmer designed golf course?
A: The signature of our courses, if you can call it that, is the playability of each course for golfers at all levels of the game. No gimmickry.

Q: Tiger Woods recently turned pro, with a tremendous amount of media attention and huge endorsement contracts. As someone who has lived in that spotlight for over 40 years, what advice would you give him?
A: Work hard on his golf. It is the key to his future -- and he has a long one ahead of him. He's just 20. I'd tell him to concentrate on what he's doing and devote himself to it. Get out and play.

Q: I won a print of the pictures of your first tee shot during the final round of the Open at Cherry Hills which you won. I would like to send it to you and respectfully request you to sign it. What mailing address would you suggest I utilize?
A: Send the print, carefully packed and with return address labeling, to my Florida office --
Bay Hill Club
9000 Bay Hill Boulevard
Orlando, FL 32819.
I'll be happy to sign it.

Q: What would recommend for a new set of irons for a female golfer weighing around 140 lbs and is 5'8". I average in the low 80's. I want a new set for my college graduation in the spring but I am confused on what kind to get. Right now I am looking at Titleist DCI's, what other kind should I look at?
A: I would hope that you would consider the new clubs being offered by my Arnold Palmer Golf Company.
Q: You were the captain of the victorious American team for The President's Cup. What are some of your favorite memories of that even?
A: Fred Couples' putt on Sunday that won it all... Mark O'Meara's great saving pitch at the 18th hole Saturday afternoon... the surprise birthday party the team sprung on me that Tuesday, a bus ride to a quaint inn in rural Virginia.
Q: What do you think was your greatest contribution to the sport of golf?
A: I really don't think that is something for me to say...
