Abracadabra 2000
In 1978, the club organised the first Clipper Cup Yacht Series. Now known as the Kenwood Cup, it is one of the most prestigious yacht races on the world ocean racing circuit. The natural progression for the yacht Club was to try it's hand at the America's Cup. The Aloha Racing Foundation was established with one goal in mind: to bring the America"s Cup to Hawaii. The foundation elected Dr James Andrews as their chairman. Together with skipper John Kolius, Dr Andrews has successfully competed in worldclass international yachting regattas for more than ten years. His past experience as a key supporter of past US America's Cup campaigns provides invaluable experience to the Abracadabra 2000 team. To add some hometown flavour famous artist Wyland was commisioned to use the hull of USA-50 as his personal piece of canvas. A Hawaian resident, and with the conservation of marine life close to his heart, and he spent three days painting the hull with various indigenous Hawaiian marine life. Humpback whales are joined by a blue marlin, bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles and the Hawaiian state fish humuhumu-nukunuka-a-pua'a. The Waikiki Yacht Club, with its centuries old seafaring traditions, year-round trade winds, challenging seas combined with the islands friendly atmosphere represent possibly the most spectacular America's Cup venue on earth. |
