The French's quest for the America's Cup started in 1970 when Baron Bich made his initial challenge for sailings holy grail. It was only 10 years later when France III made it to the finals to face Dennis Conners Freedom.

In 1987 Marc Pajot took French Kiss to the semi-finals of the Louis Vuitton Challenger series and although they didn't progress further, they certainly gained the respect of the sailing world.

The French Challenge for this years Louis Vuitton Cup is the culimination of several small groups forming under the mantra of "YAKA!", meaning "Just Do It". The Le Défi - Bouygues Telecom-Transciel is hoping to draw on the national pride that envolped the country after their success in the 1998 Football World Cup.

Sailing for the yacht club UNCL ( The National Union of Off-Shore Sailing ), Le Défi has gathered the best French talent to take on the world in the Louis Vuitton Cup and hopefully New Zealand in the America's Cup in 2000.
