CBS SportsLine wire reports Feb. 1, 1998 ARCADIA, Calif. -- Artax, a troubled second in his previous two races, led all the way Sunday to win the $107,200 Santa Catalina Stakes for 3-year-olds by 5½ lengths over favored Souvenir Copy. Ridden by Chris McCarron and carrying 114 pounds, Artax covered 1 1-16-miles in 1:42 1-5. As the 2-1 second choice in the field of six, he paid $6.20, $3 and $2.80. THE WIN WAS THE SECOND IN FIVE lifetime starts for Artax and was worth $64,320, raising the career earnings of the Kentucky-bred son of Marquetry to $191,320. Souvenir Copy, the 19-10 favorite, crossed the finish line three lengths in front of 20-1 longshot Allen's Oop, and returned $3 and $2.80. Allen's Oop was 3½ lengths ahead of Futuristic at the wire, and paid $4.40 to show. Ladies Din was fifth and Skeaping last in the 60th running of the Santa Catalina - Santa Anita's first major prep for the April 4 Santa Anita Derby as well as the Triple Crown races of May and June. "I definitely think Artax can get the (Kentucky Derby distance) mile-and-one-quarter," trainer Randy Bradshaw said. "He's got the natural speed to put you anywhere you want to be in the race, and I think that's important." BRADSHAW SAID ARTAX WILL RUN next in the $250,000 San Felipe Stakes on March 14. Artax finished second behind Real Quiet in the Hollywood Futurity, and was second behind Futuristic in an allowance race at Santa Anita on Jan. 2. "He didn't want anybody in front of him today, but he was well within himself all the way around," McCarron said. "It's definitely a step in the right direction for this colt." Souvenir Copy, trained by Bob Baffert, the trainer of Silver Charm, who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes last year, was running for the first time since finishing fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile on Nov. 8. Souvenir Copy has won three of his six lifetime starts and earned $381,640.
