1998 Preakness Stakes Profile4 -- Coronado's Quest Road to the Triple Crown | Full Coverage | Field Sire: Forty Niner
Post Position: 4 Preview: The Forty Niner colt was tabbed as the 2-1 morning-line favorite, in spite of being held out of the Derby by his connections due to his commitable behavior. The quirky colt gets back jockey Mike Smith, who returned to racing Wednesday at Belmont Park, after being sidelined since March with a broken collarbone. Minded his manners and roared to victory in the Wood Memorial, clocking the second fastest time ever for the graded stakes event. Turned in second-place finishes in the Fountain of Youth and Hutcheson Stakes despite expending almost as much energy getting into the gate as he did while running the race itself. He has since had a myectomy, to correct a flipped palate condition, and that seemed to cool his pre-race antics. Smith, won the 1993 Preakness aboard Prairie Bayou.
