Defending champion Derrick Adkins of Malverne, Long Island, faces two other 1995 Millrose winners, Andrew Valmon (400 meters) and Mark Everett (800 meters) in the meet's first head-to-head showdown between three Millrose champions of the previous year. Last yhear, Regina Jacobs won the world indoor 1,500 meter gold medal (the first such title by an American female or male), the U.S. indoor and outdoor titles, and was the Millrose runnerup. She ran the fastet indoor mile (4:26.54) in the world in 1995 by more than five seconds and the second fastest outdoor mile (4:24.34). She will face sixth ranked Anna Brzezinska (Poland), whose 1,500 meter best of 4:03.75 leads the field, 1993 winner Shelly STeely, World Championships competitor Sarah Thorsett, Kathy Franey, and Debbie Marshall.

Five-time winner Marcus O'Sullivan (Ireland) faces 1994 winner and countryman Niall Bruton in the third installment of their indoor rivalry. The first two rounds went to Bruton - a 3:58.71 to 3:58.80 victory in the 1884 Wanamaker Mile, and a 4:00.49 to 4:00.76 win in Atlanta last year. Three-time world indoor champion O'Sullivan, the third fastest indoor miler ever (3:50.94 in 1988) was in arrears by a total of .36 for both races. Seeking the first U.S. win in the event in 12 years are 1995 USA Mobil outdoor champion Paul McMullen and 1995 world indoor bronze medalist Erik Nedeau. McMullen ran 3:34.45 outdoors in the 1,500 meters last year (approximately 1 3:52 mile) and reached the finals of the World Championships. Nedeau's indoor best is 3:57.28.
