Five time winner Marcus O’Sullivan (Ireland) and 1994 winner Niall Bruton (Ireland) will battle each other as well as U.S. stars Paul McMullen and Eric Nedeau in the 70th running of the Wanamaker Mile at the 89th annual Chemical Bank Millrose Games Feb 2. at Madison Square Garden. Also competing is 1995 World Indoor Championships silver medalist Mateo Canellas (Spain).

Three-time world indoor champion O’Sullivan is the third fastest winner in race history (3:54.27 in 1989), and trails only Eamonn Coghlan (7) and Glenn Cunningham (6) in Wanamaker Mile wins. The third fastest indoor mile ever (3:50.94 in 1988), O’Sullivan 10 sub-four minute Wanamaker Mile performances is an event record. He has placed second the past three years.

Seeking the first in the U.S. victory in the event in 12 years (since Steve Scott in 1984) are 1995 U.S. outdoor champion McMullen and 1995 World Indoor Championships 1,500 meter bronze medalist Nedaeu. McMullen, who turns 24 on Feb 19, is ranked second in the U.S. The 1995 graduate of Eastern Michigan ran 3:34.45 for 1,500 meters last year, the approximate equivalent of a 3:52 mile, and reached the 1,500 meter finals (10th) at the 1995 World Championships in his first international competition. Nedeau, 24, was the 1994 NCAA outdoor 1,500 meter runner-up for Northeastern. He ran an indoor mile best of 3:57.28 last year.

Bruton, also a world 1,500 meter finalist last year, won the 1994 Wanamaker Mile in 3:58.71 and won the mile at the 1995 USA Mobil Indoor Championships in Atlanta. Bruton ran 3:53.67 for 1,500 meters last year (approximately a 3:53 mile).
