World and defending champion Gwen Torrence seeks her sixth Millrose win. Torrence won the last four Millrose sprints of the 1980's and had a 49 race indoor win streak last decade. She has come on to become the sprinter of the 1990's - as her 11-medal cache in World Championship and Olympic competition will attest to. Carlette Guidry, the fourth ranked sprinter in the world, two-time Millrose winner (1991-92) and 1995 world indoor bronze medalist, is her prime competition. World-ranked performers Celena Mondie-Milner and Chryste Gaines will also compete. After winning a pair of silver medals at the 1991 World Championships (100m and 200m), Torrence won two Olympic gold medals (200m and 400m relay) and a silver (1,600m relay) at Barcelona in 1992. She plucked a gold medal (1,600m relay), two silver medals (200m and 400m relay) and a bronze medal (100m) from the 1993 World Championships, and returned from Gothenburg, Sweden, last summer with two more gold medals, including the long-coveted 100 meters (and 400m relay).

Two-time defending champion Henry Neal (6.59 in'95) will have to be at his best to turn back the red-hot Canadian duo of Donovan Bailey and Bruny Surin. Bailey, the 1995 world 100 meter champion ranked first globally, defeated Surin on January 19 in Montreal in 6.54, five days after Surin defeated him in 6.51 Saskatoon. Surin, the 1993 and 1995 world indoor 60 meter champion (ranked third in the world), is the event's second all time performer at 6.45. Foruth-ranked Jon Drummond pits three of the world's top four in the field. U.S. indoor champion Tim Harden, with a 1995 best of 6.54, and 1993 Millrose winner Michael Green (Jamaica), who ran a best of 6.55 last year, round out a field where every competitor truly possesses the skills to win.
