| Outlook |
Similar to D.C. in its talent and depth of roster, this year's Galaxy will look
much like the one that finished up last season as runner-ups to United.
Second-year head coach Sigi Schmid has plenty
of options to replace departed Mexican forward Carlos
Hermosillo, including leading
scorer Cobi Jones, Clint Mathis, and draft
choice Sasha Victorine from Schmid's UCLA
program.
El Salvadoran playmaker Mauricio Cienfuegos will run the team alongside
creative Roy Myers.
In front of GK Kevin Hartman will be the normal stingy defense of Robin Fraser, Greg Vanney,
Ezra Hendrickson, Joe
Franchino, Steve Jolley and top draft pick Danny Califf. Danny Pena is a
strong defensive midfielder.
The Galaxy have the personnel to do great things this year -- as
well as a new investor/operator in Philip Anschutz who has pledged a new
soccer stadium for L.A. -- but still could use the one final piece of the puzzle.
If they find it, this could be the year they get past mighty United. |
