Dolphins 34, Colts 31
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Dan Marino got a second chance for his 35th
fourth-quarter comeback victory and took advantage of it.
Marino completed a 2-yard TD pass with 27 seconds to play Sunday, giving
Miami a 34-31 victory over Indianapolis after referee Gerry Austin reversed a
controversial call to keep the drive alive.
The Colts thought they sealed the victory when safety Jason Belser recovered
Marino's apparent fumble with 1:16 to play. But, Austin ruled it was an
incomplete pass after reviewing the play on replay.
"I ruled it a fumble because I saw the ball roll off his hand from behind.
Replay buzzed me, and I go over and look at it," Austin said. "When you see
it from the side view, his hand is going forward before that ball comes off.
Once that hand starts forward, that's a pass. That's the reason it was
reversed."
The Colts plan to contact league officials to discuss whether the call was
properly reversed, team president Bill Polian told The Indianapolis Star.
The play came on first down and after two more incomplete passes, Marino
connected with Oronde Gadsden for 48 yards to move the ball to the Indianapolis
2. Two plays later, Marino connected with Gadsden in the corner of the end zone
for the winning score.
Criticized by coach Jimmy Johnson earlier this week after a Monday night
loss to Buffalo, Marino passed for 393 yards and two touchdowns.
Olindo Mare kicked field goals of 37, 27, 21 and 43 yards.
"I don't always say the right things, but I say what I feel. Danny was
fantastic. After the first quarter, he did just a super job," Johnson said.
"It was a tough one to lose. We fought and fought, hung in there tough and
battled back when things looked a little shaky, but we didn't quite get it done
at the end," said Indianapolis coach Jim Mora, who did not comment on the
controversial reversal.
"The replay system is not going to be perfect, but it's better than
nothing," Johnson said. "I'm sure glad it did work out."
Neither Johnson nor Marino wanted to talk about that on Sunday.
"After 17 years, you don't know how long you're going to play. So you want
to keep having fun. Throwing the winning touchdown with 27 seconds left is
still big," Marino said. "We're playing our guts out. Give a lot of guys
credit for hanging in like we did."
The Colts got three touchdown passes by Peyton Manning and a 97-yard kickoff
return by Terrence Wilkins. Their final drive ended on a pass interception by
Terrell Buckley with 16 seconds left.
The Colts led 17-9 after the first of Manning's two TD passes to Marcus
Pollard, but Marino passed 28 yards to Tony Martin for a score early in the
final period. After Wilkins' touchdown return, Marino threw a 23-yard pass
Martin to set up a 25-yard TD run by Cecil Collins, the longest run by the
Dolphins this season.
Manning threw a 32-yard pass to Pollard as Indianapolis went ahead 31-22
with 8:14 to go. The Dolphins, who drove inside the Indianapolis 10 four times
without scoring a touchdown, reached the Colts 25 before Mare kicked his fourth
field goal.
The Colts were pinned near their own goal line on the next possession, and
Manning deliberately ran out of the end zone for a safety with 1:54 to play.
"I don't think Dan had to do anything today to ensure his spot in the Hall
of Fame," Manning said. "I've always admired him. His career is one you'd
like to model yourself after. That's the kind of quarterback I'd like to be -
that consistent for that many years."
Marino finished 25-of-38, and Martin had 10 catches for 166 yards. Manning,
meanwhile, was 17-for-24 for 274 yards.
"You saw two of the better quarterbacks in the National Football League,
one whose career is nearly over and the other just starting his career," Mora
said. "They're both great competitors. Certainly Marino has been in those
situations a lot of times."
Notes: Wilkins' kickoff return for a touchdown was the first by a Colts player
since Aaron Bailey had one in the final game of the 1996 season, a span of 35
games. It was the longest since Cotton Speyrer had a 101-yard return in 1973.
... Miami's O.J. McDuffie extended his streak for consecutive games with at
least one reception to 66. ... Harrison has TD catches in four straight games,
the longest streak by a Colts player since Jerry Richardson in 1968. ... Mare
improved his Miami record for field-goal accuracy by connecting on his four
attempts. He's made 63 of 77 attempts, including 13 of 14 this year, and has
had at least one in 14 consecutive games. ... Marino needs to pass for only
seven more yards to bring his total to 60,000.
