MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Unheralded backup quarterback Damon Huard,
who replaced an injured Dan Marino and led the Miami Dolphins to
an improbable come-from-behind 31-30 win over the New England
Patriots on Sunday, today was named Miller Lite NFL Player of
the Week.
Huard passed for 240 yards and two touchdowns, including the
game-winning five-yard scoring pass to running back Stanley
Pritchett with 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
Marino left the game in the first quarter with the Dolphins
trailing, 7-0, due to neck spasms which caused weakness in his
shoulder. After having his first pass intercepted and returned
for a touchdown by Patriots cornerback Ty Law, Huard showed the
poise of a veteran, leading the Dolphins to eight scoring
drives, including two in the final 2:45.
With New England leading 30-22, Huard broke off two scrambles
for 20 yards to help set up a 53-yard field goal by Olindo Mare,
pulling Miami within 30-25. On the game-winning drive, he
completed nine passes for 59 yards on the winning drive.
Huard completed 24-of-42 passes, including a 69-yard TD to Tony
Martin, and rushed for 54 yards.
