Pittsburgh basketball player arrested on assault charges

PITTSBURGH (AP) Pittsburgh sophomore forward Chris Seabrooks has been arrested on charges of aggravated assault.

The 6-foot-9 Seabrooks was arrested Friday following an altercation outside the school's student union on Sept. 10, according to a statement by the university.

The statement did not elaborate on details of the altercation. But first-year coach Ben Howland said Saturday night in a statement that Seabrooks was suspended from the team indefinitely pending further investigation.

Seabrooks "also will be subject to the university's student judicial system," the school's statement said.

Police said the investigation would continue.

Seabrooks played in just 21 games last season because of injury and illness. He is one of only two experienced inside players returning for Howland, the other being 6-8 forward Isaac Hawkins.

Pitt was rocked last season by the arrest of freshman guard Fred Primus for stealing $2,200 worth of jewelry during a road trip to Villanova, a factor in then-coach Ralph Willard resigning with three years remaining on his contract.

Guard Kellii Taylor also missed six games last season for alcohol rehabilitation.

The Panthers finished 14-16 last season after a 7-1 start.
