BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (Ticker) -- Urban Meyer, who spent the previous five seasons as an assistant at Notre Dame, today was named Bowling Green's new football coach.

Meyer replaces Gary Blackney, who resigned following 10 seasons at the helm of the Eagles. Bowling Green went 2-9 this year.

A native of Ashtabula, Ohio, Meyer has also coached at state schools Cincinnati (1985) and Ohio State (1986-87), as well as stints at Illinois State (1988-89) and Colorado State (1990-95). He coached the wide receivers for the Fighting Irish.

"Growing up in the state of Ohio, you know that Bowling Green has a great reputation as a University," said Meyer. "It is my goal to add to the great tradition of its football program and do so with the best interests of the student-athlete in mind."

Meyer has worked for Lou Holtz, Earle Bruce, Sonny Lubick and Bob Davie in his 16 seasons on collegiate sidelines.

"(Urban Meyer) is an outstanding coach," said Davie, who has guided Notre Dame to the Fiesta Bowl this season. "He's a difference-maker. I've got no reservations about Urban Meyer being a head coach. He has a tremendous future."
