BARCELONA, Spain (Ticker) -- The bitter Spanish matchup between Barcelona and Real Madrid lived up to its "Superclassico" billing Tuesday in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal at Nou Camp Stadium. Second-half goals by French maestro Zinedine Zidane and Englishman substitute Steve McManaman gave Real a 2-0 confidence booster for the return leg and the first victory at Nou Camp since October 22, 1983 (2-1). Barcelona will face an uphill task at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on May 1 where it lost 2-0 in round 11 of the La Liga. The Catalan side had won just 12 of 72 all-time matches in Madrid. Zidane, the best player in the 1998 World Cup, was found open on the left side by striker Raul in the 55th minute and chipped the ball over outcoming goalkeeper Oscar Bonano, who got a hand on the ball but not enough. The ball deflected slightly off Barcelona's Philip Cocu, who ran back to defend. McManaman had just come onto the pitch minutes earlier when he put the icing on the cake two minutes into added time. His goal was a similar delicate lift of the ball as Zidane's, but from the opposite side of the field inside the penalty area. Flavio Conceicao gained the ball and directed a precise pass to McManaman after Barca players failed to clear the defensive zone. Barcelona opened up the offense after conceding the first goal and just two minutes later Luis Enrique headed a left side cross by Dutchman Marc Overmars just wide of the post. In the 88th minute, Brazilian substitute Geovanni powered a shot from 22 yards that hit the crossbar. But the attacking mode left the back open which led to the second goal as well as wasted breakaways by Guti and Raul, whose weak shots were gathered by Bonano. Both goals came against the flow of the game controlled for the better part by the home side in front of more than 92,000 fans. It was a physical match between the rivals as the six combined yellow cards indicate. Real goalkeeper Sanchez Cesar was even knocked out cold by Makelele's elbow just before halftime. Cesar recovered after receiving medical attention. Barcelona started with offense in mind and had the better scoring chances in a scoreless first half. First, Dutch forward Patrick Kluivert made himself a little space inside five minutes, but his low shot from the edge of the box was covered by Cesar. Kluivert had another chance minutes later from a central position in the area, but Cesar blocked the kick with his left leg. Barcelona continued to apply pressure, and minutes later, Enrique elevated over everyone on a corner kick and headed the ball into the crossbar. Enrique also set up Brazilian Fabio Rochemback in the 28th minute for a one time boot from long range, but the ball sailed high. Real is an eight-time winner of Europe's most prestigious club trophy, most recently in 2000 and 1998. Barcelona lifted the cup only once in 1990. Barca will get Brazilian midfielder Rivaldo back for the return leg. Rivaldo was sidelined with a right knee injury. Meanwhile, Real missed Portuguese international and former Barca player Luis Figo due to yellow cards and striker Fernando Morientes with a right thigh injury. Both are expected to be available for the second leg match. English champion Manchester United hosts Bayer Leverkusen of Germany in Wednesday's other semifinal at Old Trafford. The final will be played in Glasgow, Scotland on May 15. Copyright © 2002 SportsTicker Enterprises, L.P. |
