Sanderson Wins To Move Into Semifinals

LAS VEGAS (AP) Cael Sanderson, who completed his career at Iowa State with a record of 159-0, advanced to the semifinals in the senior freestyle division at the U.S. National Wrestling Championships on Friday.

Sanderson, the top seed in the 184-pound class and wrestling for the Sunkist Club, won by technical fall over Matt Johnson of Laramie, Wyo., in the quarterfinals, 15-2.

Sanderson, of Heber City, Utah, ran off 15 consecutive points in the quarterfinal match to take a 15-2 lead before the match ended with 1:03 left in the first period.

Sanderson will face Charles Burton, of Bloomington, Minn., in the semifinals Saturday. They met in the finals last year, with Sanderson winning the match 4-1.

Also in freestyle, two-time super heavyweight national champion Kerry McCoy, of Bethlehem, Pa., won 11-0 by technical fall in 25 seconds over George Porter, of Brooklyn Park, Minn.

There are 1,800 wrestlers from 46 states at the championships, which began Wednesday.

In the senior Greco-Roman 132-pound division, Dennis Hall, a 10-time defending national champion from Plover, Wis., pinned Nathan Piasecki in 27 seconds in a quarterfinal match.

Hall is on course to face rival Jim Gruenwald, of Colorado Springs, Colo., who defeated John Fox 11-0 in the quarterfinals.
