Buenos Aires, Apr 28 (EFE).- Paraguay's Celso Ayala said he was convinced that Argentina was the best team in the World Cup's so-called "group of death" - which includes England, Sweden and Nigeria - and was one of the favorites to win soccer's most important tournament. "Argentina is the best-positioned team, although it will have a tough group with difficult opponents," Ayala said in an interview published Sunday by the La Nacion newspaper. Ayala, who plays for Buenos Aires-based River Plate, knows some of Argentina's upcoming opponents since Paraguay squared off against Nigeria and England recently. The Paraguayan player said that England was a "well-organized team, solid, strong at all levels and very capable on the counterattack," adding that they can make a seamless transition from defense to offense. "They have a great ability for the counterattack, they play to recover the ball and move it upfield," Ayala said. Nigeria has "strong and well-conditioned players, they are very fast and very agile," Ayala said. The Paraguayan player noted, however, that the African squad "was somewhat immature and strategically disorganized." Ayala said the team that Nigeria sent to the 1998 World Cup was "superior, stronger and better organized at all levels." Copyright © 2002 SportsTicker Enterprises, L.P. |
