NEW YORK (AP) John McEnroe will return to the U.S. Open this year to face four grand prize winners of a Web site contest.

He already has a warning for them.

"The last time I played in the finals at the U.S. Open was 1985 and the atmosphere was incredible," McEnroe said. "But if you plan on stepping on the court at the U.S. Open opposite me, you'd better bring your A game."

McEnroe, a four-time U.S. Open champion, will play the four Sept. 7-8. Twelve first-prize winners and a guest will receive roundtrip travel to New York and courtside box seats for two sessions of the tournament.

DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) Nick Faldo withdrew Monday from this week's European Open because of a stomach ailment.

"I'm really disappointed to have let everyone down, particularly my fans over in Ireland," said Faldo, who has gastroenteritis.

The event, starting Thursday, was scheduled to be Faldo's first appearance since finishing fifth in the U.S. Open last month.

"I was looking forward to returning to Dublin and playing at the K Club, but this illness has knocked me for six, and it's going to take a week to get back up to strength," he said.

"I was suffering a heavy cold at the end of last week, which then developed into gastroenteritis. I've had to spend the last couple of days in bed."

Faldo, 44, said he hoped to recover in time for the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond next week in preparation for the British Open later this month.

This year, the Open is at Muirfield, where Faldo won his first major in 1987. He also won the event in 1992.

LONDON (AP) Dwain Chambers will have to wait for another chance to beat Maurice Greene in the 100 meters.

Chambers, who defeated Greene at Oslo on Friday and Sheffield, England on Sunday, pulled out of Friday's Golden League meet in Paris because of a shoulder injury.

His next outing will be at the July 12-14 Norwich Union Trials in Birmingham, England, where he needs to finish in the top two to confirm his place in the European Championships.

Chambers and Greene were also due to meet in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Tuesday but Chambers withdrew from Lausanne after his Sunday win.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) Greece's supreme sports court maintained a two-year ban on Panathinaikos Athens basketball player Yiannis Yiannoulis after he tested positive for a banned substance, media reports said Monday.

The court rejected an appeal by Yiannoulis to lift the ban on his playing in local or international games, the Web site of Sportnews said.

Yiannoulis, who also plays on Greece's national team, was banned in May when a follow-up test on a urine sample taken after an April league game found traces of the banned steroid nandrolone.

He has denied taking any banned drugs and said he will appeal to FIBA, the International Basketball Federation, Sportnews said.

WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (AP) A world-class competitive boomerang thrower faces a criminal charge after trying to bring boomerangs through a security checkpoint at Bradley International Airport.

Betsylew Ross Miale-Gix, 43, of Brier, Wash., was arrested Sunday after arguing with a security screener at the airport, state police said.

The screener had noticed the boomerangs inside Miale-Gix's carryon luggage at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday and told her the items would have to be checked, state police said.

Miale-Gix became irate, began cursing, and then grabbed her bags from the screener, state police said. She continued to curse and use obscenities as she left the screening area, state police said.

She was arrested on a breach of peace charge, and released after posting a $500 bond.

Miale-Gix is an attorney and a two-time member of the U.S. Boomerang Team. She is secretary of the U.S. Boomerang Association, and she formerly held the world record for Australian round, a top boomerang event.

Boomerangs are not specifically prohibited by the Transportation Security Administration. But any item deemed to present a threat may be prohibited from an aircraft cabin, according to the administration.
