VIENNA, Ohio (Ticker) -- Kelly Robbins fended off an early challenge from Korea's Mi-Hyun Kim on Saturday and opened a one-shot lead after two rounds of the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic. Trying to end a victory drought of more than 3 1/2 years, Robbins shot a 4-under-par 68 at the Squaw Creek Country Club for a 36-hole total of 12-under 132. Robbins began the day with a share of the lead but lost it when Kim birdied three of the first four holes. "I always expect that from her, especially inside of 20 feet," Robbins said of the 1999 LPGA Rookie of the Year. "It didn't surprise me at all when she was hitting it pretty close and made a few putts." Robbins caught Kim with a birdie at the par-4 11th hole and grabbed sole possession of the lead with a five-foot birdie putt at No. 14, another par-4. Kim also shot 68 as she bids for her first victory since the 2000 Safeway LPGA Championship. Her charge faded on the back nine, which she played at even-par. "I was very confident. But after I made the three-putt (at No. 12), I was just a little confused," she said. First-round co-leader Beth Bader shot 71 to fall into a third-place tie with Danielle Ammaccapane at 9-under 135. But the day was not a total loss for Bader, who became one of five players to secure a spot in next month's Women's British Open, the final major of the LPGA season. The others were Gail Graham of Canada, Giulia Sergas of Italy, Fiona Pike of Australia and Hilary Homeyer. Dorothy Delasin will need a big Sunday if she is to complete an historic "three-peat" at this tournament. She is six shots off the lead at 6-under 138 after a second straight 69. The 21-year-old Californian is trying to become the eighth player in LPGA Tour history to post three consecutive wins at the same event. The list includes Britain's Laura Davies, who won the Standard Register PING each year from 1994-97; Sweden's Annika Sorenstam; and Australia's Karrie Webb. Squaw Creek is a par-72, 6,454-yard layout. The $1 million purse features a $150,000 first prize. (MORE) Copyright © 2002 SportsTicker Enterprises, L.P. |
