FOR GAMES OF 07/21/02 by Matt Santillo MOBILE (SOU) LHP CLIFF BARTOSH extended his scoreless streak to 17 1/3 innings in the BayBears' 9-8 victory over Huntsville. Bartosh entered the contest in the top of the ninth with a one-run lead and had the first batter reach on an error by 3B SHANE HOPPER. The lefthander then induced the next hitter into a fielder's choice that wiped out the lead runner. Bartosh then struck out one before 1B JEFF DEARDORFF stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by C HUMBERTO QUINTERO. The 22-year-old, who entered the game with 10 saves in 43 appearances, forced OF CRISTIAN GUERRERO, who was 3-for-4, to pop up to end the contest so he could collected another save. Bartosh, who has recorded 10 saves in his last 15 games, is limiting opponents to a .175 batting average over the streak, striking out 19 and walking just three.

LAKELAND (FSL) RHP PRESTON LARRISON tossed a four-hit shutout against Dunedin, 3-0, in the regularly scheduled contest. Larrison issued four walks and struck out two over seven innings to raise his record to 6-3 with a 3.06 ERA. A second-round pick of the Tigers in 2001, the 21-year-old also improved to 4-1 in seven starts at home, striking out 29 over 41 2/3 frames. He has not allowed an earned run over his last 14 innings. MEMPHIS (PCL) 1B IVAN CRUZ finished 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a home run and six RBI to lead the Redbirds to a 15-5 victory over Tacoma. Cruz lined a two-run double in the first inning, connected on a grand slam in the second and singled and scored in the eighth. This was his fourth game this season with four or more RBI. C PAT BORDERS homered twice and drove in four runs in the loss for the Rainiers. NORFOLK (INT) RHP SATURO KOMIYAMA threw a three-hit complete game, his first within the United States, against Columbus in the second game of a doubleheader, 3-1. Komiyama, who recored 83 complete games in 12 years in the Japanese League, allowed a run, struck out six and walked two over seven frames for the win. The 36-year-old, who made 21 relief appearances with the New York Mets before being transferred to the International League, is 2-0 with a 0.58 ERA in his first six starts with the Tides. ROCHESTER (INT) RHP STEVE BECHLER pitched a six-hit shutout against Scranton-WB, 5-0. Bechler, who retired 19 of 21 batters between the second and the eighth innings, struck out a season-high nine and issued a pair of walks to improve to 4-8 with a 4.22 ERA in 16 starts. This was the third shutout in his five-year career. After starting 0-5 with a 5.63 ERA in his first nine starts with the Red Wings, Bechler has won four of his last seven outings. ST. LUCIE (FSL) RHP DAVID MATTOX tossed a two-hit shutout in a rain-shortened contest versus Sarasota, 1-0. Mattox, who carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning, yielded a leadoff single to C BRIAN ESPOSITO in the sixth and 1B DUSTIN BRISSON in the seventh. Overall, the South Carolina native allowed a pair of walks and struck out four over 6 2/3 innings to raise his record to 3-2 with a 2.75 ERA in six starts. An 11th-round pick in the 2001 draft, Mattox was 6-1 with an earned run average of 3.55 at Columbia of the South Atlantic League before a promotion. WICHITA (TEX) 1B CHAN PERRY went 5-for-6 with a home run and six RBI in the Wranglers' 17-8 victory over El Paso. Perry singled in the first inning, lined a two-run double during a seven-run second and singled again in the fourth. He drilled his 11th homer of the year, a grand slam, in the fifth and collected another base hit in the sixth. In his last seven games, the 29-year-old is batting .387 (12-for-31) with a pair of longballs and 14 RBI. RHP ANDREW GOOD, who entered the contest with a 9-0 record and a 2.40 ERA over his last 12 appearances, gave up nine runs -- two earned -- and nine hits in two innings for the loss.
