In his third start of the season, Dunwell, selected in the 15th round by the Athletics last month, issued a pair of walks and struck out two batters over five innings to capture his first victory as a professional. The 22-year-old recorded nine outs among the first 10 batters he faced and retired the side in order in the fifth, extending his scoreless-innings streak to 11 2/3 and dropping his batting average against to .149 in seven games. The San Diego State product received defensive help from OF AUSTIN NAGLE. With one on and two outs in the fourth inning, Nagle made a diving catch to rob Indians DH TREY DYSON. Burton, who was selected seven rounds prior to Dunwell, came on to make his fifth relief appearance in nine games this year and allowed one walk, striking out six, in four innings to earn his first save. The 6-5, 220-pound righthander from South Carolina recorded a pair of strikeouts in both the sixth and seventh frames and induced a fly out from each of the final two batters to give his team its first no-hitter since joining the league in 2000. EDMONTON (PCL) RHP SCOTT RANDALL recorded his 12th consecutive victory in the Trappers' 4-2 triumph at Tacoma. Randall yielded two unearned runs and six hits with six strikeouts and no walks issued over eight innings, improving to 12-0 with a 3.32 ERA in 20 outings, including 16 starts, this season. The 26 year-old, who signed with the Twins on February 4, began his sixth season as a pro with New Britain of the Class AA Eastern League and went 2-0 in five starts with a 3.48 ERA, allowing 25 hits, striking out 19 batters and issuing just four walks in 31 innings. Following his promotion, the California native made his first start with Edmonton on May 4 and has gone 10-0 in 15 outings, including 11 starts, with a 3.25 ERA. The 6-3, 200-pound hurler has fanned 40 batters and issued just 16 walks in 83 innings with the Trappers. Randall is now tied with Kirk Saarloos for the second longest winning streak in the minors this season, just two wins behind the leader Joe Roa. He has also tied Manny Aybar for the longest winning streak in the Pacific Coast League over the last four years. Aybar won 10 straight decisions for Memphis in 1998. ELSEWHERE IN THE MINOR LEAGUES CLEARWATER (FSL) RHP TAYLOR BUCHHOLZ tossed his fifth career shutout, giving him a league-high four complete games, to lift the Phillies over Dunedin, 4-0. The 20-year-old from Pennsylvania yielded five hits, issued a pair of walks and recorded five strikeouts to earn his second complete-game triumph in as many starts. A sixth-round selection of Philadelphia in the 2000 draft, Buchholz retired 12 of the 14 batters he faced between the third and sixth frames and now leads the league with 146 2/3 innings pitched. DURHAM (INT) RHP LANCE CARTER pitched a four-hit shutout, his first in over seven years, in the Bulls' 12-0 triumph over Indianapolis. Carter struck out a pair without issuing a walk to record the second shutout and second complete game of his eight-year career. The 27-year-old faced the minimum through seven frames, yielding just a single in the first inning in his first shutout since June 6, 1995 when he threw a seven-inning four-hitter for Springfield of the Class A Midwest League. The 6-1, 190-pound hurler signed with the Devil Rays as a free agent on January 11 of this year. The Florida native is 6-2 in 27 appearances, including 12 starts, with a 3.21 ERA. Carter has allowed 76 hits with 55 strikeouts and just eight walks issued over 89 2/3 innings. EUGENE (NWST) OF STEVE BAKER homered twice for the second time this year and drove in five runs to lead the Emeralds past Boise, 6-4. The 22-year-old came into the contest with just two hits in his previous 31 at-bats and crushed his first professional grand slam in the bottom of the first inning. The New York native, selected by the Padres in the 29th round last month, launched a leadoff blast in the seventh, giving him a team-high eight longballs and 26 RBI. FORT WAYNE (MID) 3B GREG SAIN went 4-for-5 and drove in a career-high five runs for the Wizards in an 11-4 rout over Dayton. Sain, a native of Phoenix, Arizona, doubled home a run and scored in third inning, laced an RBI single in the fourth and belted a three-run shot in the fifth for his second longball in six games against the Dragons. SAN JOSE (CAL) RHP JEFF CLARK won his eighth consecutive start, spinning six scoreless innings for the Giants in a 7-1 triumph at San Bernardino. The 6-6, 240-pounder scattered a pair of hits and struck out eight batters for the fifth time in his last seven starts en route to his league-leading 12th win. The 22-year-old recorded two strikeouts in the first, third and fourth frames, helping him lower his ERA to a league-best 2.06. He has now pitched 29 consecutive innings without allowing a run. RHP KEVIN OLORE allowed six hits and struck out a season-high 10 batters over six scoreless, but received a no-decision for the Stampede. TAMPA (FSL) RHP ROGER CLEMENS spun five innings in his first rehab start from a groin injury for the Yankees in an 8-4 win over Sarasota. The 6-4, 235-pound veteran, who threw 92 pitches in his first minor-league start since 1995, allowed three runs and five hits, including a home run, with two walks, striking out six to pick up the win. Clemens fanned four of the final seven batters he faced and could rejoin New York for a scheduled start next week. TULSA (TEX) RHP TRAVIS HUGHES spun his first career shutout in the Drillers' 6-0 victory over Shreveport in the first game of a doubleheader. Hughes issued four walks and struck out six batters over seven frames, improving to 9-6 with a 2.87 ERA in 20 starts. The 24-year-old retired 21 of the 26 batters he faced, setting down 13 in a row between the first and fifth innings in his first win since July 4. The 6-5, 235-pound righthander, who is 7-4 in 14 outings at home this year, recorded a strikeout in six of the seven innings for a season total of 115 with 97 hits allowed in 113 innings of his fifth professional season. WILMINGTON (CARO) C JUSTIN COWAN went 0-for-4, halting his hitting streak at 19 games for the host Bluerocks in a 2-0 victory over Kinston. The 24-year-old grounded out to shortstop in the second inning and flied out in both the third and sixth frames before striking out swinging in the eighth. With the strength of 26 hits over his 19-game streak, Cowan, who was batting .294 when the streak began on June 29, raised his batting average 19 points to .313 and has 92 hits, 15 doubles, a triple, four homers and 28 RBI in 58 games for the season.
