BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) Belgium athletics officials have moved to ban European record-holder Mohammed Mourhit for three years for failing a doping test.

The 21-year-old runner underwent an out-of-competition test on May 3 that showed the use of EPO, or erythropoietin, an illegal endurance-boosting substance.

His lawyer, Daniel Spreutels, claimed Friday that the Belgian federation made procedural mistakes, and doubted the International Amateur Athletics Federation would impose the ban.

Mourhit became a Belgian national in July 1997. He holds three European records at 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
