Decter and John Claeys EL PASO (TEX) LHP MIKE GOSLING recorded the second shutout of his first professional season and picked up his league-leading 12th win in the Diablos' 6-0 victory over Midland in the first game of a doubleheader. Gosling scattered three hits, issued a pair of walks and struck out five to improve to 12-3 with a 2.83 ERA over the first 22 starts of his career. The 21-year-old, who was a second-round selection of the Diamondbacks in 2001, retired nine of the first 11 batters he faced, induced an inning-ending double play in the fifth and set down six of the final seven hitters. The 6-2, 210-pound southpaw has won his last three starts and is 6-0 over his last eight. Gosling owns the third-best ERA in the league and has allowed 115 hits and fanned 93 batters over 136 2/3 innings. RHP JASON ARNOLD allowed a run and three hits, striking out nine and walking three, over five innings for the win in the second game, helping the RockHounds split the doubleheader. The 23-year-old improved to 3-0 with a 2.36 ERA in five starts since coming over from the Yankees in the trade for Jeff Weaver on July 6. JUPITER (FSL) LHP DONTRELLE WILLIS continued his outstanding pitching since being promoted, tossing seven scoreless innings in the Hammerheads' 11-5 victory over St. Lucie. Willis, who was moved up from the Class A Midwest League on July 22, yielded one hit and struck out six to improve to 2-0 without allowing a run in two starts with Jupiter. The 20-year-old had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning until 2B DANIEL GARCIA led off with a single into center field. An error by SS MIGUEL CABRERA in the second prevented him from throwing six perfect frames. Overall, Willis has struck out 12, yielded five hits and issued just one walk in his first 15 innings in the Florida State League. The southpaw, who posted a 10-2 record and a 1.83 ERA in 19 starts with Kane County, had a pair of 20-plus scoreless-inning streaks earlier this year.

BRISTOL (APPY) OF DARREN CIRACO hit safely in his 20th straight game, a 10-0 shutout of Johnson City. Ciraco singled home a run in the first inning, connected on a two-run homer in the second and laced an RBI base hit in the sixth. A native of New York, he has 19 RBI in his last 10 ballgames. Currently, the 21-year-old leads the Rookie-level Appalachian League in both batting average (.383) and slugging percentage (.632). RHP RUDDY MORALES threw six scoreless innings to improve to 3-0 with a 4.07 ERA in eight starts. The 6-5, 185-pounder yielded two hits, a walk and struck out two. FORT MYERS (FSL) RHP BEAU KEMP picked up his sixth save in as many appearances in the Miracle's 1-0 victory over Charlotte. The 21-year-old, who entered the contest with the second-most saves in the league, allowed just one hit over 1 2/3 innings to notch his 22nd save. He induced a pair of groundouts to first base to close out the eighth inning, then allowed a leadoff single in the ninth before retiring the next three batters in order. In 57 1/3 innings this year, the Oklahoma native has a 0.31 ERA, a batting average against of .198 and has not allowed an earned run in his last 28 innings-pitched. HARRISBURG (EAST) RHP JULIO MANON and RHP BRYAN HEBSON combined on a six-hit shutout in the Senators' 6-0 victory over league-leading Akron. Manon, in his first Class AA start since July 15 of last year, scattered five hits and issued a walk, striking out 10 batters over six innings for the win. The 29-year-old, who went 8-6 with two saves and a 3.50 ERA in 28 appearances, including 13 starts, with Ottawa of the Class AAA International League this season, struck out the side in the first and fourth frames and fanned a pair in the sixth. Hebson yielded a hit and struck out a batter, facing the minimum over three innings of relief to collect his fifth save. The 26-year-old is holding opposing batters to a .184 average with 55 hits allowed over 85 1/3 innings. A first-round pick of the Expos in 1997, the 6-5, 210-pound hurler is 9-0 with a 1.69 ERA in 33 outings, including three starts. INDIANAPOLIS (INT) RHP NICK NEUGEBAUER made his first rehab start in the Indians' 6-3 loss to Durham. Neugebauer, who is rehabbing a strained right rotator cuff, gave up four runs, three hits and issued four walks with a pair of strikeouts over the first 2 1/3 innings to suffer the loss. The 22-year-old retired five in row after walking the bases loaded in the first inning. The 6-3, 235-pound hurler yielded a pair of singles, induced a fielder's choice and issued a walk in the third frame before surrendering a grand slam to OF PAT LENNON. Overall, the California native, who was 1-4 with a 5.09 ERA in seven starts with Milwaukee prior to the injury, threw 50 pitches, 25 for strikes. The 34-year-old Lennon added an RBI double in the fifth inning and singled and scored in the seventh, giving him two homers and 12 RBI in 10 games with the Bulls. KANNAPOLIS (SAL) LHP RYAN WING notched a win in his sixth consecutive appearance to help the Intimidators down Hagerstown, 5-3. Wing yielded a pair of runs and five hits, striking out four and walking two, in seven innings to also earn his fifth winning decision in as many starts. Overall, the improved to 9-5 with a 3.83 ERA in 20 games. LYNCHBURG (CARO) 2B JOSH BONIFAY extended his hitting streak to 22 games in the Hillcats' 4-3 triumph over Myrtle Beach. Bonifay, who hit .418 in the month of July, finished the contest 1-for-4. He singled in the first inning before grounding out twice and lofting a fly ball into center field. He failed to record more than one hit in a game for just the third time in his last nine. MACON (SAL) LHP MACAY MCBRIDE threw a five-hit shutout against Charleston-SC, 4-0. McBride yielded just one extra-base hit, a walk and struck out six to raise his record to 9-7 with a 2.00 ERA in 20 outings. A first-round pick in 2001, he has won his last four starts and complied a scoreless-innings streak of 22 1/3. In 121 1/3 frames this year, the 19-year-old has struck out 110, issued 41 walks and limited opponents to a .203 batting average. NEW ORLEANS (PCL) LHP CARLOS HERNANDEZ made his first rehab start, pitching three innings of a combined three-hit shutout in the Zephyrs' 1-0 triumph over Fresno in the second game of a doubleheader. Hernandez, who was placed on the 15-day DL July 2 with a sore left shoulder, yielded a hit and issued a walk with two strikeouts, but did not figure in the decision. The 22-year-old induced five flyouts and a pair of groundball outs in the first Class AAA start of his six-year career. The Venezuelan was 5-4 with a 5.01 ERA in 17 appearances, including 15 starts, with Houston before his injury. OF KYLE LOGAN, who was the only player in the game with two hits, reached base on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth inning and scored the winning run when SS DAVE MATRANGA doubled down the left field line to help New Orleans earn a split of the twinbill. OTTAWA (INT) RHP TIM DREW pitched seven solid innings in the Lynx's 5-1 triumph over Rochester, handing the Red Wings their 10th straight loss. Drew yielded an unearned run and six hits with a walk and two strikeouts to record a victory in consecutive starts for the first time with his new club. The 23-year-old retired 12 of the final 14 batters he faced, inducing an inning-ending double play in the seventh. Traded by the Indians with Bartolo Colon on June 28, Drew posted an 8-4 mark and an ERA of 3.27 in 15 starts for Buffalo. Since the deal, he is 2-2 with a 3.97 ERA in seven starts with Ottawa. Rochester, which has been outscored, 54-26, during its slump, holds the longest streak of its kind in the International League since Louisville dropped 11 straight in August of 2000. WINSTON-SALEM (CARO) RHP WYATT ALLEN spun a two-hit complete game for the Warthogs in a 5-0 victory at Potomac. Allen, selected in the first round by the White Sox last year, issued a pair of walks, threw one wild pitch and struck out three batters to earn the win and even his record at 7-7. The University of Tennessee product retired 14 of the first 16 batters he faced and had a no-hit bid broken up by a leadoff single in the sixth inning.
