Islanders Sign D Brandon Smith; Asham Accepts Qualifying Offer

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) The New York Islanders signed defenseman Brandon Smith on Saturday.

Smith, 29, had six goals and 35 points in 59 games with San Jose's AHL affiliate in Cleveland last season.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Smith has played for Islanders coach Peter Laviolette before, with Providence of the AHL from 1998-2000. The 6-foot-1, 196-pound Smith has three goals and seven points in 30 NHL games over three seasons with the Boston Bruins.

Also Saturday, the Islanders announced that forward Arron Asham accepted his one-year qualifying offer.

Asham was acquired from Montreal in a draft-day deal for Mariusz Czerkawski on June 22. He played 35 games for the Canadiens last season, finishing with four goals and eight points.
