FOR GAMES OF 08/03/02 by Matt Santillo, David J. Decter and John Claeys PHILLIES (GULF) RHP FRANCISCO BUTTO spun a seven-inning no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader against the Royals, 2-1. Butto, who recorded the first individual no-hitter in the Gulf Coast League since David Martinez threw seven hitless frames for the Yankees in 1999, yielded an unearned run and struck out seven to improve to 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA in nine appearances. The 20-year-old also issued a pair of walks and hit two batters. He had the first hitter of the game, SS ANDRES BLANCO, reach on a dropped third strike error by C JEURY DIAZ. After Blanco advanced to second a groundout, he was able to score when Diaz made a crucial throwing error, his second miscue of the inning. A native of Venezuela, Butto was on the hook for the loss until his team rallied in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs in the frame, 2B OMAR BRAMASCO laced a single and SS ESTEBAN DELOSSANTOS followed with a two-run homer to give the Phillies their first win in 11 games when trailing after six innings. DelosSantos entered the seventh batting just .178 in his last 73 at-bats. RHP CHAD DURBIN made a rehab start for the Royals. A third-round pick in the 1996 draft who went 9-16 in 29 starts with Kansas City in 2001, allowed a hit, a walk and struck out one in 1 2/3 innings.

EDMONTON (PCL) RHP SCOTT RANDALL recorded his 13th consecutive victory in the Trappers' 7-4 triumph over Sacramento in the first game of a doubleheader. Randall, who went 2-0 in five starts with New Britain of the Class AA Eastern League to open the season, allowed three earned runs and nine hits with four walks and five strikeouts over five innings. He improved to 11-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 16 appearances, including 12 starts, for Edmonton. The 26-year-old is now 5-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his last five games, allowing 36 hits and seven walks with 19 strikeouts over 36 innings. The 6-3, 200-pound pitcher now holds the second longest winning streak in the National Association this season, just one win behind Joe Roa, who won 14 straight decisions for Scranton-WB of the International League. The only other pitcher this season to win as many games at one level is John Koronka, who went 11-0 with Stockton of the Class A California League. The all-time record for consecutive wins in a single season in the Pacific Coast League is held by Frank Browning, who recorded 16 straight wins for the 1909 Champion San Francisco Seals.

SAN BERNARDINO (CAL) RHP CLINT NAGEOTTE spun his fourth consecutive game with 10 or more strikeouts to help the Stampede down Visalia, 6-4. The 1999 draftee allowed three runs -- two earned -- and six hits with a walk, striking out 12 batters in 6 1/3 innings to give him a mark of 3-0 over his last eight starts. Nageotte, a 21-year-old from Ohio, fanned five straight batters between the third and the fifth and struck out the side in order in the sixth. The 6-3, 200-pound righthander, who led the Class A Midwest League in both SO/9 IP (11.02) and total strikeouts (187) last year, has fanned 45 batters in his last 28 1/3 innings-pitched and leads the league with 168 total.

ELSEWHERE IN THE MINOR LEAGUES

BINGHAMTON (EAST) LHP PHIL SEIBEL recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts in the Mets' 5-1 victory over Trenton. Seibel yielded a run and four hits with a walk over seven innings for the win, improving to 8-6 with a 3.64 ERA in 22 appearances, including 19 starts, in just his second year as a pro. The 23-year-old fanned a pair in the first, sixth and seventh innings and the side in the fourth, surpassing his previous high mark of eight strikeouts, which he produced in his last start on July 29. The Kentucky native retired 17 of the first 21 batters through six scoreless frames before yielding a leadoff double and a run to 3B KEVIN YOUKILIS in the seventh.

BRISTOL (APPY) OF DARREN CIRACO extended his hitting streak to 21 games in the White Sox's 12-1 pounding of Johnson City. After going 0-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored in his first four plate appearances, Ciraco connected on his eighth homer of the season with two outs in the eighth. The 6-2, 200-pounder owns the longest hit streak in the Rookie-level Appalachian League since Kerry Robinson hit safely in 23 straight for the Cardinals in 1995.

CLEARWATER (FSL) RHP KEITH BUCKTROT tossed his fourth career complete game for the Phillies in a 6-1 triumph over Sarasota. Bucktrot, selected by Philadelphia in the third round of the 2000 draft, yielded one run, allowed four hits and struck out a batter to capture his first win in his last eight appearances. The 21-year-old from Oklahoma set down 16 consecutive batters between the second and seventh frames and induced a fly out from two of the final three batters for his first complete game since June 14 of last year.

JUPITER (FSL) SS MIGUEL CABRERA homered and drove in five runs to defeat St. Lucie, 10-4. The 19-year-old delivered an RBI groundout in the first inning and crushed his first career grand slam in the sixth, bringing his team-high RBI total to 65, one shy of a personal single-season high.

LAKE ELSINORE (CAL) RHP DUNCAN MCADOO recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts over seven solid innings to defeat Rancho Cucamonga, 4-1. The 24-year-old Texan yielded one run and scattered three hits to earn his fourth victory in as many starts and improve to 7-3 in 37 appearances. The Houston University product retired the final 11 batters he faced, striking out eight of the final nine at one point to bring his season strikeout total to 103 in 98 1/3 innings-pitched. He also combined with RHP MIKE NICOLAS to fan eight consecutive batters between the sixth and eighth frames.

MACON (SAL) RHP MATT WRIGHT registered seven-plus strong innings for his seventh consecutive victory in a 3-1 win over Charleston-SC. Wright, a 6-4, 220-pounder from Waco, Texas, yielded an unearned run, scattered seven hits, hit a batter and struck out three over 7 1/3 frames to even his record at 7-7. Despite a June 27 outing when he allowed four earned runs in five innings, the 20-year-old, who entered the contest fourth in the league with 123 strikeouts, has a 1.46 ERA over his last 11 starts.

NEW HAVEN (EAST) RHP RHETT PARROTT recorded his second complete game in his last three starts in the Ravens' 9-2 victory at Portland. Parrott, who pitched a three-hit shutout on July 24, allowed two runs and six hits with seven strikeouts and a pair of walks over nine innings to win his third straight start. He retired 11 in a row between the first and fifth innings, including the side in order by strikeout in the third. He also induced three inning-ending double plays and 14 groundball outs overall. Parrott improved to 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA in four starts with New Haven. The 22-year-old was 8-5 with a 2.71 ERA in 19 starts for Potomac of the Class A Carolina League before his promotion. The 6-2, 190-pound hurler, who won his last start with Potomac on July 13 before being recalled, was a ninth-round selection of the Cardinals in 2001. The Georgia native has allowed just 20 hits and five walks with 18 strikeouts and no homers in 32 innings with the Ravens.

NEW ORLEANS (PCL) LHP JERIOME ROBERTSON pitched a shutout, his first in over two years, in the Zephyrs' 6-0 victory over Fresno. Robertson scattered five hits, issued four walks and fanned five batters to record his first shutout since May 5, 2000 when he tossed a three-hitter for Kissimmee of the Class A Florida State League. The 25-year-old retired 12 of the first 14 hitters and eight of 10 between the sixth and eighth frames, improving to 11-6 with a 2.49 ERA in 22 starts. He is now tied for the league lead in wins with Scott Randall of Edmonton, Chris Fussell of Omaha and Shane Nance of Las Vegas. In his fifth season as a pro, the California native has allowed 128 hits with 97 strikeouts over a league-leading 148 1/3 innings pitched.

SALT LAKE (PCL) C SAL FASANO homered in three consecutive at-bats in the Stingers' 9-5 victory over Iowa. In his second game with Salt Lake since being traded by the Brewers, Fasano went deep to left field off starter RHP CHRIS GISSELL in the fourth inning. RHP COURTNEY DUNCAN came on in relief in the sixth inning and gave up a homer to Fasano, the first batter that he faced, and surrendered another in the eighth.

SAVANNAH (SAL) RHP JASON ANDREW spun four perfect relief innings to lead the Sand Gnats past Asheville, 2-1. The 22-year-old out of Pacific Lutheran (WA) struck out seven of the first nine batters he faced en route to extending his scoreless-innings streak to 22 1/3. Andrew, who was inked by the Rangers on June 16 as a nondrafted free agent, is 2-0 with an ERA of 0.34 in six appearances, including three starts, with Savannah.

SCRANTON-WB (INT) RHP EVAN THOMAS won his seventh consecutive decision in the Red Barons' 6-2 victory at Rochester, handing the Red Wings their 11th straight loss. Thomas allowed two runs and five hits with a walk and four strikeouts over six innings to win his second straight start. The 28-year-old, who won five consecutive starts between June 20-July 14, retired eight of the first nine batters and five of the final six that he faced, improving to 8-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 17 games, including 15 starts. In his third full season with Scranton, the Florida native has allowed 76 hits and fanned 57 batters in 87 2/3 innings. With the loss, Rochester has now tied the longest losing streak in the International League over the last nine years. Louisville dropped 11 straight in 2000 and Toledo lost that many in 1999.

SOUTH GEORGIA (SAL) LHP JONATHAN FIGUEROA struck out nine batters over five impressive innings to lift the Waves over Columbus, 3-1. The 18-year-old rookie yielded one run and one hit with a pair of walks to pick up the win and raise his record to 2-0 in three starts. The 6-5, 205-pound southpaw fanned the side in the second and fourth frames and retired eight of the final nine batters he faced. Figueroa, who was signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Dodgers on January 22, posted a record of 2-1 with a 1.42 ERA and a .147 batting average against in seven starts with Great Falls of the Rookie Level Pioneer League before being moved to South Georgia on July 20.
