DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) Grey Memo, a 14-1 long shot, charged from last place to win the $250,000 San Diego Handicap by three lengths Sunday at Del Mar.

Favored Congaree, trained by Bob Baffert, was third. Baffert was in New Jersey on Sunday, where he saddled War Emblem to a wire-to-wire victory in the $1 million Haskell Invitational.

"He just ran out of gas," jockey David Flores said of Congaree.

Grey Memo, ridden by 50-year-old Eddie Delahoussaye and trained by 80-year-old Warren Stute, trailed the field of eight older horses until overtaking Congaree inside the final furlong to win.

Grey Memo covered 1 1-16 miles in 1:43 2-5.

"I figured I'd be running at the end, and when I hit the quarter pole, I was going by them like they were standing still," Delahoussaye said.

Gray Memo paid $30, $10.20 and $4.20. Euchre returned $7.40 and $4.40, while Congaree was a half-length back in third and paid $2.40 to show.

The victory, worth $150,000, increased Grey Memo's career earnings to more than $1.3 million, with eight wins in 37 starts for the 5-year-old.
