IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) Iowa defensive back Benny Sapp was arrested on charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public intoxication after police saw him push a woman into a building.

The 21-year-old Sapp was charged with three simple misdemeanors and released on his own recognizance from the Johnson County Jail on Sunday.

Police patrolling a pedestrian mall early Sunday saw Sapp push a young woman into a building, causing her to hit her head against a window. When officers approached Sapp, he became belligerent, and seemed to undergo mood swings, according to the police report.

A breath test showed Sapp's blood alcohol level at 0.155 percent. The legal standard for intoxication is 0.10 percent.

When the officers attempted arrest Sapp, he repeatedly pulled away.

"The officers had to use pepper spray to subdue him," said watch commander Lt. Jim Steffen.

Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz declined to comment on Sapp's arrest Sunday night when contacted by sports information director Phil Haddy.

Sapp, a junior, was cut under the left arm by a broken bottle at an Iowa City bar last month. The bar owner has defended Sapp and said Sapp was trying to avoid an argument.
