EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- The Edmonton Oilers on Monday avoided arbitration with right wing Anson Carter, signing him to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed. Carter registered 28 goals and 32 assists for 60 points last season and set career highs in all three categories. "Anson had his best season last year and it can be disconcerting when a team's budget is controlled by someone else," Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe said. "The contract reflects Anson's contributions but still keeps us within our target numbers." Carter was one of 26 players in the NHL to be arbitration-eligible, including his teammate, defenseman Jason Smith who will have his case heard Friday. On Sunday, Dallas center Jason Arnott won his case and gave the players a 3-0 advantage. Copyright © 2002 SportsTicker Enterprises, L.P. |
