SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) George "Khalib Kasib" Jones continued his rise through the light heavyweight ranks with an impressive unanimous decision over Demetrius Jenkins on Tuesday night. Jones (18-1) knocked down Jenkins with a stiff straight left in the second round, then staggered him with a series of right hands in the next round. "I knew I didn't want to brawl with him," said Jones, 34, a left-hander from Paterson. "That was the strategy. No brawling. I couldn't waste my time with that." In the fifth round, Jones hurt Jenkins again, this time using two roundhouse lefts. Jenkins (21-8), of Detroit, staged a mild rally and hit Jones with two rights, but was thwarted by a stiff left by Jones in the closing minute. Jenkins had to take a standing 8-count in the seventh round. On the undercard, junior welterweight Demetrius Hopkins, the nephew of undisputed middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins, overcame a sluggish start to capture a unanimous eight-round decision over Edwin Vasquez. Hopkins improved his professional record to 11-0-1, while Vasquez dropped to 19-8-1.
