UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) The New York Islanders signed center Shawn Bates to a two-year contract extension on Wednesday.

Terms of the deal were not announced.

Bates, who had one season remaining on his contract, posted career bests of 17 goals and 35 assists last season after signing a free agent contract with the Islanders. He spent the first four years of his NHL career with the Boston Bruins.

Used as a penalty killer and forechecker, Bates finished with a plus-18 last season.

He scored one of the most memorable goals in franchise history when he converted a penalty shot against Curtis Joseph in the Islanders' Game 4 victory against Toronto in the first round of last year's playoffs.
