CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) The Miami Hurricanes lost a second recruit from this year's freshman class Wednesday when wide receiver Darnell Jenkins was declared academically ineligible. Coach Larry Coker said Jenkins plans to enroll at Miami in January. Coker declined to address the specific problem that prevented the 5-foot-11 wideout from playing this fall. Jenkins, who caught 62 passes for 720 yards and nine touchdowns as a senior at Miami Central High last year, was one of four players who did not report Tuesday because of academic problems. The other three - Parade All-American running back Devin Hester, defensive back Terrell Walden and defensive lineman Alton Wright, a junior college transfer - still have not been admitted to the university. "We're certainly optimistic things are going to work out well for those guys," Coker said. The defending national champions already lost linebacker Nate Harris, whose scholarship offer was revoked after he was arrested and charged with armed robbery in June.
