Brandi Chastain had a first-half goal for San Jose (8-7-5), two points behind Atlanta for the final WUSA playoff spot.

To advance to the playoffs, San Jose needs a victory in its regular-season finale at Boston on Saturday and an Atlanta loss to Philadelphia on Saturday.

Melissa Moore had six saves for Philadelphia (11-3-6), tied for first place with Carolina.

ATLANTA (AP) Julie Foudy beat U.S. World Cup teammate Briana Scurry on a header in the 46th minute as San Diego beat Atlanta.

Carly Smolak made four saves for her second shutout for San Diego (5-11-4). Atlanta (10-8-1), which needed a victory to clinch the final playoff spot, lost its second straight game.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) Birgit Prinz and Danielle Fotopoulos scored second-half goals in Carolina's victory over New York.
