Top-Seeded Farina, Sanchez-Vicario Upset In Finland

ESPOO, Finland (AP) Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic upset top-seeded Silvia Farina Elia of Italy 7-5, 7-6 (3) Thursday in the second round of the $140,000 Nordic Light Open.

Fourth-seeded Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain lost to Hungary's Petra Mandula, who came from behind for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory in 2 hours, 6 minutes.

Chladkova, 23, coming back from mononucleosis after the Australian Open, advanced to Friday's quarterfinals where she will meet Asa Svensson of Sweden, who downed Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-0, 6-3.

Mandula goes against Patricia Wartusch of Austria, who beat Slovenia's Maja Matevzic 6-4, 6-4.

In other quarterfinal action, third-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland meets qualifier Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia while Gala Leon Garcia of Spain plays fifth-seeded Martina Sucha of Slovakia.

The tournament is the first major women's tour event in the Nordic countries in more than 20 years.
