LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) New Mexico State defensive end Ross Davis was in critical condition Thursday, a day after he underwent surgery for a blood clot in his head, his father said.

A tumor was also discovered during the operation on Wednesday night in El Paso, Texas, his father, Patrick Davis, told a school official Thursday.

Ruben Lucero, a spokesman at Thomason Hospital in El Paso, said Davis, a 6-foot-4, 233-pound redshirt freshman, was in critical but stable condition Thursday afternoon. Lucero said the hospital could not release any other information.

According to a statement issued by New Mexico State's athletic department, Ross Davis initially checked himself into Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces. He later was transported to the El Paso hospital.

A spokesman for the university said it was unknown if Davis' medical situation was in any way related to football.

Davis' brother, Alex, is a starting defensive end for the Aggies.
