NEWPORT, Wales (AP) Former British Open champion Paul Lawrie had four birdies in 11 holes Friday and led the rain-shortened second round of the Wales Open.

Birdies at Nos. 3, 5, 6, and 7 moved Lawrie to 9 under. He faced a 6-foot birdie putt at the 12th when play was suspended.

Play was stopped three times for a total of 5 hours, 45 minutes before being halted for the day. Two players completed their rounds and half the field was waiting to tee off.

Australia's Richard Green, who shared the first round lead with James Kingston of South Africa, was second at 8 under through five holes.

Kingston did not start his second round.
