Bob Contiguglia was unanimously re-elected Friday to a second four-year term as president of the U.S. Soccer Federation and hopes to complete a contract extension for national team coach Bruce Arena within a month.

After Arena led the United States to the quarterfinals, its best World Cup performance since 1930, the USSF wanted the coach to stay on for an additional four years.

Arena is amenable to staying on, and Contiguglia said completing the deal is a matter of working out details. The American team has only two more games this year, on Nov. 17 and in December, as it starts to prepare for 2006 World Cup qualifying, which starts in 2004.

Contiguglia, unopposed in his bid for re-election, was given the second term at the annual meeting of the USSF in San Francisco. He said one of his priorities was "sitting down with Bruce Arena, when he's back on board, and our technical staff on how we best spend our resources on player development."

Arena, hired by Contiguglia in October 1998 after the Americans finished last at that year's World Cup in France, declined to comment on the status of his contract talks.

He spoke to the USSF board on Thursday and to the entire membership Friday, and according to Contiguglia said "although we are up there with the best teams in the world, we're not the best team in the world."

Arena described the effort needed to put the U.S. team in position to reach a higher level and contend for a World Cup title, and also cautioned how difficult it is to get one of the three World Cup berths from the North and Central American and Caribbean region.

"Qualifying for the next World Cup is not going to be automatic," Contiguglia quoted Arena as saying. "It's going to take a lot of work and preparation."

On other topics, Contiguglia said the United States has no idea on the status of its bid to stage the FIFA Confederations Cup, scheduled for next June 18-29. Australia, France and South Africa also have bid for the eight-nation tournament, and the FIFA executive committee is scheduled to decide Sept. 23.

Contiguglia also said the USSF currently has a $5 million surplus, but it is not related to the performance of the World Cup team.

He said the USSF's contract with Nike calls for the Americans to play World Cup champion Brazil, but no date or site has been selected. The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority would like to have the game at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., where 70,635 attended Thursday night's exhibition between European champion Real Madrid and AS Roma.

Manchester United is scheduled to finish its four-game preseason U.S. tour at Giants Stadium next July 20.
