BOULDER, Colo. (AP) Colorado coach Gary Barnett has received a new five-year contract worth up to $8 million.

The University of Colorado Board of Regents voted 8-1 Thursday to approve the contract extension.

Regent Jim Martin opposed the contract, arguing that players at NCAA Division I universities should be compensated for the long hours they put in and injuries they suffer.

University officials would not release Barnett's updated contract, saying certain details had yet to be worked out, such as whether to include more language dealing with the coach's responsibility for players and recruits.

Barnett's annual package, which includes a $2 million payment if he stays five years, is worth $1.6 million. The contract runs through July 31, 2007. His previous contract ran through Jan. 21, 2006. His base salary increases from $163,000 to $180,350, and his Nike shoe contract and broadcasting revenue jumps from $340,000 to $640,000.
