SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) Tailback Julius Jones is academically ineligible to play for Notre Dame this season but could return next season, coach Tyrone Willingham confirmed Friday.

Willingham had previously declined to comment on Jones' status. Offensive coordinator Bill Diedrick last month confirmed media reports that Jones would not play this season, but he would not say why.

Willingham said Friday that Jones is not a Notre Dame student this semester because of "academic difficulties," but said he can apply for reinstatement next school year.

"We hope he is successful and would be delighted to have him back at that time," Willingham said.

In three seasons Jones ran for 1,750 yards - a 4.3 average - and had 19 touchdowns. He was plagued by injuries the past two seasons.

Sophomore Ryan Grant becomes the team's most experienced back. He played in five games last season, gaining 110 yards on 29 carries.
