Former Ut-Arlington Coach, Ad Dies

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Claude Gilstrap, the winningest football coach at Texas-Arlington and a four-time national junior college coach of the year, has died. He was 88.

Gilstrap, who suffered from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, died Friday at his son's home in San Francisco, the school announced Saturday.

He was 85-40-3 at UTA, then called Arlington State, from 1953-65. He was also the school's athletic director for 22 years.

Gilstrap was 162-88-9 in 26 seasons of coaching, including stops at Crockett, Wharton and Cleburne high schools; Paris Junior College, Schreiner and UTA.

Gilstrap won three national coach of the year titles with Arlington State and one at Paris.

His 1956 and 1957 Arlington State teams won the Junior Rose Bowl. The 1957 squad was 12-0.
